Adopting a dog - the story of Gracie and Archie

After I went through a breakup and moved into my own house, I
decided that I wanted to get a dog to keep me company and offer some
protection and peace of mind. I had a dog growing up and enjoyed her
very much. She lived to be 17 years old and was like a best friend. I
loved that dog, Lucky, dearly. So...my journey to finding the right
dog for me began. I had seen Weimaraners before and thought that they
were a beautiful breed that exuded intelligence, charisma and fun!!
First thing I did was go to the library and check out several books
about the breed. I gathered information to make sure that I would be
making the right choice for me.
I found my first Weimaraner almost 5 years ago. I had done my
research and decided that a Weimaraner was the dog for me. I wanted a
dog that was active, loyal, loving and protective. The Weimaraner
definitely met these needs and more!! I was single and very active,
so I wanted a dog that could keep up with me. Sometimes I think that
I must be crazy because I was often the one trying to keep up with my
dog Gracie. She was an adorable 7 week old puppy when I bought her
from a local breeder. I was lucky to have help with her from my mom
and aunt to let her out several times a day while I was at work until
she was old enough to wait all day for me to get home from work. I
enjoyed her so much.
One day I got the idea that getting another dog to keep her
company while I was at work would be good for her. She was 2 years
old then. I had stumbled upon a website for a Weimaraner rescue and
decided that I wanted to adopt my next dog. I knew what that breed was like and thought that adopting one of these Weims would be the
responsible thing to do.
I decided that I wanted to adopt an older dog because I didn't
have the time to put into a puppy. My mom and aunt had moved, so I
wouldn't have the help that I'd need for another puppy while working at
my job. An older dog was a good fit. I contacted the rescue and
filled out an application to adopt one of their available Weims. A
volunteer came out to my house and did a home inspection and approved
my application. The next step was to find a dog that would get along
with my Gracie and fit in with us.
I visited several dogs up for adoption at their fosters homes. The
first dog that I got my heart set on just wasn't the one for us. He
was wonderful...but not the one for me and Gracie. His wonderful
foster actually brought him to my home to see how they would interact
on a second visit after they had met at an adopt-a-thon event. I must
admit that I was very disappointed that this match didn't work out,
but as I found later, the perfect fit was still waiting out there for
us to find him.
Our next adventure took us down near Dundee, Michigan. It was a
bit of a drive from Flint, but I was willing to go anywhere to find
the right match. Unfortunately she was too much like Gracie and they
really didn't get along...another female princess!! This was 2 months
into my search.
I arranged another visit with a third dog foster who had about 6
dogs from the rescue. We drove to Grand Haven, Michigan to visit
them. Gracie was afraid of Baxter, the Weim we originally went to
see. He was a really big, beautiful Blue Weim. My Gracie is a slim,
sleek little thing. They really were opposites. They weren't a good
match either. However, while we were there, Gracie hit it off with
Archie. The two of them were closer in size and neither objected to
the other. They were friendly to one another and started to play. We
visited for about 3 hours and before I knew it, Archie had "adopted"
us. He seemed to be attached to me from the moment I got there. It
was as if he was just waiting for us to come find him and take him
home.
Archie was 4 when I got him...two years older than Gracie. He had
been relinquished to an animal shelter by his previous owners. We
adopted him and to this day, almost 3 years later, we are one big
happy family! They are so happy together and play often. I really
have to say that it has been easier having 2 dogs than just one! I
would highly recommend any one dog family finding a sibling for their
dog. They seem happier and truly enjoy each others company.
Finding the right Weimaraner to adopt for your home is not always
a quick and easy task. Please keep that in mind if you decide to
begin the journey of adopting one of our Weimaraners we have
available. It can sometimes take meeting several different dogs and
may take months, like it did for me, to find just the right match.
Whatever you do...don't get discouraged if the first dog or two you
meet is not the one for your family. I was patient and found the
right dog for us. Good luck and enjoy finding your new best friend!
